Before you fall in love with a hopeless romantic,

Know that we are the most hopeful

People you will ever meet

Know that my heart is not a hand me down,

From all the times that I have given it away,

But a library of second hand paperbacks

In a world where no one reads anymore

It is a lighthouse

For the shipwrecked

In a landlocked country

Know that my fingers may be worn out from

The touch of lost lovers and masonry

But they will still caress you

On the nights that you cannot sleep

Know that I am a box of souvenirs

And every one I have ever loved

Was a gift shop

I am a traveller,

Left behind by too many cities

Know that I believe in fairy tales

Not for the happy endings,

But because I know that all the monsters are real

I have lain in bed with them on too many nights

And written ballads for them

In languages I did not know how to speak

Know that my lips may be worn out,

Grazed from all the poisoned apples they have touched

But my kisses will still be gentle

When the world is not

Know that I will not break

When I fall for you
