Flame

Darling, don't sit too close to the flame

That dances inside me

It may glow brighter than the sun

But it has blackened it's share of hearts

My backyard is a landfill of ashes

And by the time the dust settles

You and I will be long gone

This fortuity is not one we can outlive

I know you have never known fervor this strong

That you have weathered more snowstorms than a mountain top

I know how your colorless fingertips long for

The kiln they think my body is

But darling, don't sit too close to the flame

That is my master

Because burns take longer to heal than a frostbite

And even warmth comes at a price

When you are in love with an arsonist

Mistaking it for a fireplace
